KUUB designed the new headquarters for advertising agency Ronin in the heart of Amsterdam. There was a need for separate spaces - for the different disciplines and for the layers in the organisation - that were easy to navigate. The challenge was how to turn this into a spatial unity. It turned out to be an exciting game with openings, form and routing, in which hard forms are softened by the materialisation.
Cheese wedge in space
The answer contains a wedge-shaped element, nicknamed the ‘cheese wedge’. This is a strategically placed volume that runs through three wide zones, and connect them. In the construction, there were only four narrow wall perforations, and these now run exactly along the wedge, so that these openings appear much wider visually: with four narrow wall perforations, a single large space is created!
The wedge contains, among other things, an open kitchen and a glass meeting room. This forms a transparent, subtle separation between the partners and the employees of the various disciplines. This creates a very open atmosphere.
Sharp yet soft
There is a stark contrast between the spatial shell of concrete (white and hard) and the volume in this space (black and soft) of Buxkin, undulating recycled leather. This gives the sharp volume a pleasant appearance and texture.
Various green interventions also soften the office environment. The park is visually drawn in with a garden, a zen patio, and planters integrated into the tables and the wedge.
